On January 1, 2013, the City of Chattanooga adopted the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) with a provision that both the envelope and duct tightness testing be performed by a Certified Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier. A certified DET verifier shall be a certified Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) Rater, or be a Building Performance Institute (BPI) analyst, or successfully complete a certified DET Verifier course approved by the City of Chattanooga.
This two day course is designed to introduce the skills necessary to become a Certified Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier, qualified to perform the diagnostic testing required by the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code with City of Chattanooga amendments.
Course Includes:
- Math Basics for DET Verifiers (prerequisite, provided upon registration)
- Procedure for blower door and duct leakage testing
- Calculations for ACH50 and percent duct leakage
- DET Training workbook
- Written DET Verifier exam
- In-field DET Verifier exam
- Certificate of course completion
- Lunch
To achieve designation as a DET Verifier, a student must receive a passing score on both exams (included in tuition costs). After successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to test the leakage of a building envelope and duct system, and evaluate the results according to the City of Chattanooga code requirements.

Students must bring a calculator for the field and written exam.
